The Mets All-Stars & How They Got Here

The Mets enter the All-Star break in first place in the NL East.  They’ve played some of their best team baseball in franchise history, with the best record at the break since the World Series Champion, 1986 Mets.  With all their success as a team, a few players have stuck out and will be representing the Mets in Los Angeles for the All-Star game, Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte, and Edwin Diaz.

Pete Alonso enters All-Star weekend as the Homerun Derby favorite after winning the past 2 contests in his first 3 seasons.  But he doesn’t just hit HRs, he also drives in runs, as he is the MLB’s RBI leader with 78, a club record at the time of the break.  Pete has been everything and more for the Mets since his debut in 2019.  He’s flourished on the field, but tonight is where he really gets his money, and that is in the Homerun Derby.

For the first time since 2019, Jeff McNeil has been voted into the All-Star game.  He’s been an integral part of the Mets’ homegrown core since 2018 and has earned this trip to L.A.  McNeil will actually be starting in the All-Star game due to injury so that should be great for Mets fans.  On the season, McNeil is hitting .300 with a 123 OPS+.  He’s been one of the best hitters on the Mets, leading the team in batting average.

Starling Marte was a huge signing for the Mets this offseason and they have certainly reaped the benefits and so has he, as he has been selected to his 2nd All-Star game.  Marte has been great for New York as he is hitting .295 with a 128 OPS+, along with swiping 12 bags.  He’s played a very solid right field as well, helping the Mets on both sides of the game.

Perhaps the best reliever in the game and a staple of the New York Mets, Edwin Diaz, is in L.A. this weekend as he has certainly earned his spot on the All-Star roster.  This is Diaz’s 2nd All-Star appearance and 1st with the Mets.  He’s posted the lowest ERA of his career (1.69) and has an 18.1 k/9, which is also career-best.  He’s added 20 saves to his name and has been an absolute force this year for New York
