The Subway series has been one of the most historic rivalries in baseball history, though it hasn’t always been played between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.  Rather it was played by the original New York clubs, the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, and the New York Yankees.  From 1921-1956, these 3 powerhouses competed for the subway series at the world series before the Giants and Dodgers went west.  Eventually, the Mets replaced these 2 teams as the National League New York team.  The subway series was put on pause for many years, until the introduction of interleague play in 1997.

The Mets and Yankees have had some classic matchups over the years, and while the Yankees have the upper hand, that didn’t stop the bloodbath of a rivalry that took place in the year 2000.  The Mets and Yankees met for a very special world series, fueling one of the best player rivalries ever, between Mike Piazza and Roger Clemens.  The Yankees would go on to win the World Series 4-1 in a tightly fought bout by the Mets.

Last Year’s rendition of the subway series turned out to be an instant classic.  The series that took place during mid-September in Queens gave us 3 of the better games of the year.  In game 1, the Mets poured it on as they handily beat the Yanks, as they were dressed in their Friday night black uniforms led by a young Tylor Megill.  In game 2, the Mets and Yankees dedicated this game to the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.  With special commemorative uniforms, high emotions, and trading leads with big hits, the Yankees took this one in a memorable game.  Finally, game 3 took place on Sunday Night Baseball, and with a sold-out crowd, Francisco Lindor hit 3 big ones, as the Mets just kept coming back to beat the Yankees.

The Mets and Yankees rivalry is stronger this year than in normal years due to both teams sitting a top of their respective divisions.  It should be a fun 2-game series in flushing with first pitch set for 7:10 at Citi Field.
