Nick Saban’s pockets just got a little heavier.

Alabama approved an eight-year, $93.6 million extension for head coach Nick Saban, making him the highest paid college football coach in the country. The amended deal for Saban now runs through 2030 and will pay him an average of $11.7 million a year. He will be 78 years old when his contract expires.

In a statement released Tuesday, Nick Saban said that he and his family “are very appreciative of the unmatched commitment the University has shown to this football program and our family over the last 15-plus years. This is our home, and we look forward to finishing our career at Alabama.”

Nick Saban became the head coach for Alabama in 2007. Since then, the Crimson Tide have a record of 178-25 and have won 6 national championships. Saban holds the record for most national championships in college football with 7 (he won in 2003 as head coach of LSU). Since 2008, Alabama have spent all or part of each season in the No. 1 ranked positions in the polls.

Alabama have been dominant under Nick Saban since the inauguration of the college football playoff in 2014. Alabama have made it to the tournament in seven out of eight seasons, only missing out narrowly in the 2019-20 season. Of those seven, Alabama have moved onto six championship games, winning three in 2015, 2017, and 2020.

Earlier this offseason, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart signed a new deal that made him the highest paid coach in the country. The new deal on Tuesday for Saban edges Smart pay.

Saban’s new contract includes bonuses and provisions that could earn him more money if he earns less than the average of the top three highest paid coaches in the SEC or top five highest paid coaches in the nation.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have the best football coach in the nation and one of the greatest coaches of all time, regardless of sport, here at Alabama in Coach Saban,” Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne said in a statement on Tuesday.

You can catch Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide in action on Saturday September 3rd when they take on Utah State.
