It’s do or die.

After a 6-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night the Mets now find themselves tied with the Atlanta Braves atop the N.L East. The Mets entered the game with a one game lead over Atlanta and quickly fell behind the eight ball as Carlos Carrasco struggled, allowing four runs in three innings.

It was more of the same that we’ve seen lately from the Mets, who often struggle out of the gate to some of the National Leagues bottom dwellers. The Mets are now 1-6 at Citi Field in seven games against the Nationals, Cubs and Marlins in the month of September. To this point the Mets have managed a respectable 14-10 record this month but they haven’t been able to match Atlantas 17-7, bringing us to the stalemate.

“This is really, really fun being in a race like this. Every day is a chance to be great.” said Pete Alonso in the locker room post-game Tuesday night. While it’s great the Mets have a loose clubhouse feeling, they need to come out of the gates swinging tomorrow and the rest of the way.

As for the series with Atlanta this weekend, that is far from the status quo. Hurricane Ian is expected to batter the southeast, making landfall in Atlanta on Friday, AKA, the day the pivotal series begins. As of now there is no tentative plan for games to be moved but it’s a pipe dream to think these games are played on schedule. Both teams share an off day on Thursday which is being rumored to possibly be the new start date of the series with the expectation that Friday and Saturday gets rained out. If that indeed deems true, the teams would play a double-header on Sunday.

That situation is less than ideal. Having teams this late in the season with a series of this much importance, playing a double header is out of the norm, but unless the MLB has plans of moving this series to a neutral site with a dome, that might be the only option.

Buckle up. The final week of the regular season is underway.
