David Montgomery (ankle/knee) did not practice Thursday.

Montgomery who was forced out of the Bears Week 3 win over the Texans has now logged back-to-back DNP’s to start the week. All the stars are aligning for Khalil Herbert to start in Week 4.

The second-year RB is coming off a monster performance in which he rushed for 157 yards on 20 carries with two TDs. He also added two catches for 12 yards, while running a route on 56% of Justin Fields drop-backs. Herbert has never rushed for fewer than 75 yards in a game he has played at least 50% of the snaps. He’s averaging over 100 rushing yards per game in that same five-game sample size. Montgomery has rushed for 75 yards-plus five times since the start of 2021.

Matt Eberflus called the Montgomery “day-to-day” but the injury look far worse than that – suggesting Montgomery most likely is week-to-week at this stage. Barring a miracle on Friday, Herbert will be on the RB1 line against the Giants.
