The Cubs released OF Jason Heyward.

The writing was on the wall as the Cubs prioritized evaluating younger players. The 33-year-old veteran was limited to just 48 games this past season due to right knee inflammation. He hit just one home run and drove in ten runs across 151 plate appearances.

The Cubs will have to eat the final $22 million left on his original eight-year, $184 million contract that he signed back in 2016. All in all, Heyward was an integral part of Chicago’s 2016 World Series title despite the contract probaly being a failure overall.  He’ll go down as one of the most talented all-around outfielders in his prime.

“A lot of history being broken. A lot of winning,” Heyward said. “What a ride for this city, for this fanbase. And the love that I’ve received, the love that we’ve received — the guys that were part of those groups — is never taken for granted.”

Retirment could be in the cards for Heyward who has quielty played 13 seasons in the league.
