US Soccer Men’s National Team Midfielder Weston McKennie addressed Qatar-based US Military members at a training session in Qatar on Wednesday, near Al Udeid Air Base.

“We are happy you guys are here,” McKennie said on the field. “The sacrifice that you guys, your family make is incomparable. My dad did it.”

Weston McKennie’s father served in the military. He traveled and at one point, 16 years ago, was stationed in Germany when the USMNT visited the Rammstein Air Force base. Weston got to meet players from the US Men’s National Team, including Landon Donovan. It was a full circle moment for the Juventus player, now a starter ahead of the World Cup’s opening match on Monday November 21.

“For you guys to take the time out of your day to come here to support us is a big thing. We want to say thank you to you guys and obviously we are going to do our best to represent you guys, our country the best we can.”

US Coach Gregg Berhalter also addressed the military members in attendance for the training and thanked them for their support.

The USMNT also played a pickup game with migrant workers in Qatar on Tuesday, showing their support for the other one million workers who risked their lives to prepare for the World Cup this year.

Support for the US team is ramping up for the World Cup. This past week, television’s Ted Lasso has placed billboards with notes for each player on the squad in their hometowns. “You may be from Little Elm, but there’s nothing small about the way you play the game,” the American coach in London dedicated to Weston McKennie in his hometown in Texas.

The US play their first game against Wales on Monday November 21. Kick off is at 2 PM EST on Fox and FS1.
