Zach Eflin Inks Largest Free Agent Contract in Rays History

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed RHP Zach Eflin to a three-year, $40 million contract.

The deal was agreed to nearly two weeks ago, but has now been made official. Bafflingly, it’s the largest free agent contract in Rays’ franchise history. The previous record was a five-year $35 million deal with pitcher Wilson Álvarez prior to the 1989 season.

The 28-year old right-hander posted a ho-hum 4.04 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 75 2/3 innings (20 appearances, 13 starts) last year with the Phillies. Eflin in all likelihood will be utilized as a starter, in which he should benefit tremendously from the friendly confines in Tropicana Field.

The Rays designated right-hand pitcher J.P. Feyereisen for assignment, in order to make room for Efling on the 40-man roster,
