Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been hired as interim assistant coach for the Purdue Boilermakers, the school announced.

Head Coach Jeff Brohm left last week to join his alma mater Louisville after winning the Big Ten West this season. Ryan Walters will take over the head coach position next season with Heff’s younger brother Brian Brohm serving as head coach for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2.

In a statement, Drew Brees announced his excitement for joining his alma mater. “I am extremely excited to work with our team over the next few weeks as we prepare for the Citrus Bowl. I see it not only as an opportunity to coach and mentor this group of young men, but represent all the former Purdue players that care so much about our program.”

Brees left Purdue after the 2000 season to enter the NFL draft, leaving the Indiana school as the conference’s leader in passing yards, touchdowns, total offensive yards, completions and attempts.

Drew Brees was drafted 32nd overall by the San Diego Chargers in 2001. In 2006, Brees joined the New Orleans Saints, the team he would end his career at, winning Super Bowl XLIV and setting the record for career passing yards (which was broken by Tom Brady).

Purdue’s Athletic Director, Mike Bobinski announced his excitement for Brees joining as an interim assistant. “For more than two decades, Drew Brees has shown the world what makes the Boilermakers special. He was an elite football player, but most of all, Drew is an extraordinary leader. Gaining his insights on the football field and in our coaching offices during this time of transition will be of great value to our student-athletes and staff.”

Purdue will face LSU in the 2023 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Jan 2 at 1 PM.
