ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Cubs have reached a agreement with free agent Eric Hosmer.

It’s a one-year deal for the 33-year-old who will make just north of the MLB minimum. He’s still owed almost $39 million from a disastrous eight-year, $144 million contract he signed with the Padres prior to the 2018 season. San Diego is on the hook for almost all of that.

Hosmer, a shell of his former self hit just .268 with eight home runs in 104 games last season and figures to platoon with 1B prospect Matt Mervis.

The Cubs continue improve heading into the 2023 season. Hosmer joins a cast of others such as Dansby Swanson, Jameson Taillon, Cody Bellinger, and Tucker Barnhart who all figure to play an integral role for the new look Cubbies. It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Chicago to be competitive this season in which projects to be a middle of the road NL Central.
