According to Adam Schefter, the Texans have requested permission to interview 49ers Defensive Coordinator DeMeco Ryans for their head coach vacancy.

The Lovie Smith era was short lived, as Houston decided to move on from their journeymen coach after one disastrous season. Smith’s dismissal makes Houston only the second team since 1970 to have two consecutive one-and-done coaches. The first? The 49ers, on two occasions, from 1976-78 and 2015-16.

A Ryans-Houston reunion makes a ton of sense on paper. The 38-year-old spent his first six seasons in Houston after the team selected him in the second round of the 2006 draft. The former Crimson Tide Linebacker was selected to two pro-bowls before playing his final four seasons in the league with Philadelphia.

Ryans has been on staff with the 49ers since 2017, serving as a defensive quality control coach, inside linebackers coach, and defensive coordinator.

He seemingly a lock to become a head coach next season with a number of team showing interest in day one of the NFL offseason.
