The Jets have hired former Broncos HC Nathaniel Hackett as their new offensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.

Hackett, was fired as Denver’s head coach after the team started 3-8 with one of the league’s most unaspiring performances in recent history. The Broncos finished dead last in points per game (16.9) despite going all in for Russell Wilson in the offseason. The 43-year-old was just the third head coach to be fired before his first season ended since the 1970 merger.

Well just a month later, Hackett has shockingly bounced back.

The Jets newly acquired OC began his career in 2003 as an assistant coach for UC Davis and Stanford.

Prior to this season, he coached for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Green Bay Packers for thirteen seasons. His most recent position was with the Packers as their offensive coordinator.

An experienced NFL signal-caller, he has generated a top-10 scoring offense three times as a coordinator and led three teams to Conference Championship games (2017-JAX, 2019-GB, 2020-GB).

Hacket actually worked with Jets HC Robert Saleh on the Jacksonville staff of Doug Marrone in 2015-16, when Saleh was the Jaguars’ linebackers coach and Hackett was the quarterbacks coach. Saleh left for San Francisco in 2017 but Hackett stayed on as Marrone’s offensive coordinator from 2016-18.

The Spin:

Well, now the speculation begins. There could only be one logical reason why the Jets bring in a former HC, fresh off one of the worst performances in the history of the NFL. And that is Aaron Rodgers.

The two reportedly have a “strong” bond and with Rodger’s open to leaving Green Bay, believe it or not, the Jets should be deemed the favorite to land the four-time MVP.
