(New York, NY) — One of the most beloved and talented radio announcers in all of baseball has reportedly been battling for his life over the past year.

New York Mets booth radio announcer Howie Rose is admitting to a battle with bladder cancer. Rose tells Andrew Marchand of the New York Post that he dealt with treatment privately during the 2021 season and struggled with cancer treatments.

“I knew that wasn’t good,” Rose said.

The 68-year-old underwent the knife during that 2021 season, electing for surgery that left him no longer able to work by the time September rolled around. Thankfully, he made it out with no harm, and now wants to share his story to help others.

“The bottom line, after the pathology came back after the surgery, the doctor basically said, ‘You’re good to go,’ Rose said. “The surgeon, he says, ‘You have no restrictions, do whatever you want.”

“It really is miraculous when you get a handle on what they actually do,”  the lifelong radio announcer added. “Doctors say a person can basically live a normal life after this type of surgery.”

Rose had his cancerous bladder, along with his prostate, removed and a new bladder, created from the intestines. The surgery was done at Mt. Sinai Hospital with the use of robotics.

The Brooklyn native is expected to be in the booth when the Mets take on the Astros in their first Spring Training game on February 25th.
