Kaseem Vauls’, a 21-year-old college football player from Jackson State suffered cardiac arrest Wednesday morning.

Vauls’ father, William, said doctors resuscitated him and put him on a ventilator later that afternoon, after surgery. The defensive lineman is currently in stable condition, but “still critical,” according to The Clarion-Ledger.

The South Carolina native was rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center on Tuesday night thanks to stomach pain and shockingly suffered cardiac arrest the following morning. William Vauls said his son had not been feeling well for a couple of weeks, but hadn’t informed anyone about the stomach pains.

A cardiologist said Vauls heart was functioning at only around 10 to 15 percent capacity.

“What the doctors think happened, that when Kassem’s heart was failing, that what was giving him the stomach pains,” William told The Clarion-Ledger. “His liver was suffering as fluid built up with toxins in his liver, kidneys and blood. All those toxins built up in his bloodstream and his heart could not operate properly and the machine is being used to clean out the blood and toxins.”

The Jackson State athletic department has not yet commented on the incident.

Kaseem Vauls, was a redshirt freshman in 2022 after attending Alabama A&M during the 2021 season, but failed to enter a game.
