NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that Derek Carr is visiting the Jets over the weekend.

The 31-year-old was released by the Raiders earlier this week after he declined to waive his no-trade clause. Carr has spent the entirety of his nine year career with Las Vegas leading the team to two playoff appearances. The release allowed the Raiders to avoid paying the former second-round draft pick more than $40 million this season.

Now the Jets are the first in line to meet with the veteran signal caller.

According to NFL Network’s’ Ian Rapoport, Carr is “high on the Jets’ list” this offseason. The quarterback reportedly visited the New Orleans Saints a week prior to his release. The Panthers and Titans also have been linked to the four-time Pro Bowler.

Of all the teams interested, the Jets seemingly on paper, project as the strongest fit. They have a young talented cast of weapons on offense and a lockdown defense. Despite the dream team of Zach Wilson, Mike White and Joe Flacco – Robert Saleh managed to have his team in playoff contention.

12. Jets (21): Seven wins seems awfully impressive given their offense played with 10 functional players most of the season. Aaron Rodgers is clearly the dream scenario, but even a mid-tier QB like Jimmy Garoppolo or Derek Carr should elevate New York to playoff caliber.

Remember, the Jets hired Todd Downing as their passing game coordinator this week. Downing was the Raiders’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator early in Carr’s career. The two reportedly have a “great” relationship.

Jets owner Woody Johnson has made no secret about his willingness to spend on a quarterback this offseason and now it’s time to put his money where his mouth is. The team is also heavily in the running for four-time MVP winner Aaron Rodgers.

Regardless, it appears the Jets will have a new face under center entering the 2023 season. For now? Enjoy the ride.
