Before their Super Bowl victory has even turned cold, the Kansas City Chiefs are bidding Eric Bieniemy farewell as he departs as the offensive coordinator and assistant coach with the Washington Commanders. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network broke the story.

Bieniemy has overseen one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses in recent years: the Chiefs ranked first in the NFL in total yards of offense three times and led the league in scoring two times. They’ve also run the AFC during his tenure, never winning fewer than a dozen games.

His success with Kansas City has made Bieniemy an obvious contender to move up on the coaching rung with another franchise, and his ambitions of doing so have always been clear. Bieniemy lost out on becoming the head coach of the Colts earlier this year, but he reportedly spent the last few days making great strides with the Commanders brass before the deal seemed imminent Friday morning.

The Chiefs would have preferred their offensive coordinator back, and Bieniemy surely would have preferred a head coaching job, but now he has a chance to build his own staff in the nation’s capital and improve his resume further.

As for Bieniemy’s now-former team, Matt Nagy is the name being thrown around as the guy set to inherit the Super Bowl-winning offense.
