Gary Sanchez Returning to the Bronx?

As the start of the 2023 season looms on the horizon, the Yankees have a dire need at the catcher position. Believe it or not, there is one prime candidate that could fill the void. His name; Gary Sanchez.

The team announced today that catcher prospect Josh Breaux won’t be throwing for the next few weeks after an elbow injury that occurred at camp yesterday. The 25-year-old had an MRI, but the results are unknown. The injury adds to an already nightmare spring for the Yankees in the catching department. Ben Rotvedt is still recovering from shoulder surgery that resulted from an aneurysm, leaving Jose Trevino and Kyle Higasioka as the lone survivors on the 40-man roster.

That makes a Gary Sanchez-Yankees make up more and more likely.

The free agent is in Miami gearing up for a WBC run with the Dominican Republic. A standout performance could lead to a contract, but only likely a minor-league deal.

Despite a potential quick turnaround from a WBC run to MLB spring training, Sanchez is already familiar with the team. The Yankees had tendencies to roster three catchers at the Triple-A level, which for Sanchez would allow him to split time with Breux when healthy.

With not a lot of priority prospects in Triple-A for the Yanks, Sanchez could sign a minor-league deal that includes an opt-out on June 1st, giving him, two months to show he can be an asset for the Yankees or another team in need.
