( New York, NY) — The clock is ticking for the New York Giants. Speaking Thursday, GM Joe Schoen said the team isn’t close on an extension for QB Daniel Jones.

“You’re starting to feel the time crunch. Wish we were a little closer on a deal than what we are right now. But again, there’s still time,” Schoen told NFL Network on Thursday. “We’re gonna circle back up again today at some point and meet with his representatives.”

The Giants reportedly met with Jones’ agents at the Combine in hopes to finalize a deal before Tuesday’s franchise tag deadline. The 25-year-old is seeking $45 million per year while the Giants are looking to keep him closer to $35 million range. Jones desired salary would make him one of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

“It’s got to be right for both parties,” Schoen said earlier in the week. “I say it all the time, if-then scenarios, we’re going through those. If it gets out of hand and it’s out of our comfort zone we have the tag, we can only tag one player, we’ll use that. If someone’s got to walk then that’s unfortunate but that’s a part of the business. We’re still building a team, that’s important to keep in mind.”

With the deadline quickly approaching, the most likely outcome is placing the franchise tag on the fifth-year quarterback, which would likely send RB Saquon Barkley to the open market.

Remember, last year the Giants chose not to exercise the fifth-year option on Jones rookie deal , which would have paid the former Duke star $22.4 million in 2023.
