Former Islanders Defenseman Dead at the Age of 75

(New York, NY) — Gerry Hart, a defenseman who played across 14 seasons in the National Hockey League, died on Saturday at the age of 75.

Hart, who played for the Islanders from 1972-79, helped the team reach their first appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs in the 1974-75 season.

No cause of death was disclosed.

The Long Island native played for the Islanders from 1972-79, helping the team reach the playoffs five times during the seven seasons. Har joined the Islanders as an inaugural member.

Across his career with New York, the defensemen scored 20 goals and 108 assists alongside 783 total penalty minutes. After retirement, He returned to Long Island and opened a recreational complex in Happauge in the early 1990s. He was inducted into the Suffolk (County) Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Hart is the fourth Islander from the team’s glory days to die since January 2022, following Clark Gillies, Jean Potvin and Mike Bossy.
