(New York, NY) — Aaron Hicks is going to Baltimore, according to reporter Joez.
Hicks had received his outright release on Friday after the Yankees failed to find a trade partner. Despite the signing, New York is still eating up the nearly 30 million dollars owed to Hicks through 2025.
Despite the outfielders struggles, Baltimore makes for a logical fit with Cedric Mullins suffering a right abductor (groin) strain in Monday’s loss to the Guardians.
Through 28 games this season, Hicks posted a .524 OPS. The 33-year-old joined the Yankees through a trade in 2016 and was later tied up in a seven-year deal in 2019.
“I hope what doesn’t get lost is a couple of really good seasons that he had here,” manager Aaron Boone said prior to the Yanks’ 5-1 loss to the Padres. “Some injuries really impacted his time here, probably impacted his career and his ability to get back to that level.”
Those injuries led to procedures including Tommy John surgery in 2019 and a repair to a torn tendon sheath in 2021.
Now, Hicks is cut with an opportunity for outfielder Greg Allen to enter the fold as a potential x-factor in the outfield for the Bronx Bombers.
