(Boston, Massachusetts) — The Boston Red Sox superstar shortstop is nearing a return.
Trevor Story (elbow) said Sunday that he’s aiming to begin a minor league rehab assignment following the Mid Summer Classic.
I’m almost there,” Story said. “I think we’ll have a rehab assignment pretty quick after the All-Star break, not exactly sure when.”
The Red Sox begin their second half schedule on July 14th.
Manager Alex Cora also noted that when Story returns it will be as a shortstop, as the team has no plans to bring him back sooner as a designated hitter.
“He’s been so good so far, no obstacles, no red flags, you never know what can happen in the upcoming days … but so far it’s trending in the right direction, and fast,” Cora emphatically stated.
Story could stay on his rehab assignment for up to a maximum of 20 days, although if he’s feeling well, it probably won’t be that lengthy.
The 30-year-old infielder missed the first half of the regular season recovering from January’s internal brace procedure on his right elbow. He hasn’t played in a major-league game since Sept. 11.
Story’s return to the lineup would be a major boost for a club fighting for an American League Wild Card spot.
