Florham Park, NJ May 31, 2023 -- Jets head coach Robert Saleh addresses the media before the start of the Jets OTA.

NEW YORK — Jets head coach Robert Saleh is finally owning up.

Speaking on Wednesday the Jets coach said Zach Wilson “definitely needs to get better.”

It comes just days after Saleh has inexplicably defended the quarterback’s miserable play for the past three weeks. ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported Tuesday that Saleh’s refusal to critique Wilson has caused turmoil within the Jets locker room.

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson (2) and wide receiver Randall Cobb (18) talk towards the end of the game. The Jets lose to the New England Patriots, 15-10, at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023, in East Rutherford.

‘We see on a day in and day out basis is a young man who is much improved from a year ago,” Saleh said. “He’s much more confident, he’s much more accurate, he’s got much more command of the huddle, he looks better in the pocket. Could have been better yesterday, but he’s improved, and he’s getting better. He’s going through his progressions, and when he is hitting his back foot with his timing and rhythm, he looks fantastic, and you just don’t throw people away man. You just have to continue to work with him.

“He’s here, he gives us our best chance to win, and as coaches, we’re going to do everything we can to help him.”

Well, that statement didn’t age well.

The Jets signed QB Trevor Siemian on Wednesday and he could see on-field action sooner rather than later if Wilson doesn’t suddenly improve.

Saleh said Siemian would be inactive this week against the Chiefs.
