(Kansas City, MO) – One person is dead and upward of 15 people are hurt from a shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade in Downtown Kansas City. Among those, three patients are in critical condition and five are in serious condition.

“Shots were fired and multiple people were struck,” the Kansas City Police Department posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). “We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.”

Video posted to social media shows first responders, some armed with long guns, running into the Union Station train depot. That’s around where the parade route ended. Estimates say around 1 million people attended the proceedings.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters it’s not clear what prompted the incident or if there was more than one active shooter.

Paradegoer Arnold Sauther said when the rally ended the Chiefs went into Union Station, and fans followed the players to get autographs.

“Then, all of a sudden they all started running out, and you see all these policemen come running in there — and you knew something happened in the station,” Sauther told Kansas City ABC affiliate KMBC.

“We see people running and we hear gunshots and we take off running. And we look over and there’s a guy next to us on the ground,” witness Jennifer Wilbers told KMBC.

Chiefs wide receiver Justin Watson said that all players, coaches and staff who were at the parade are safe and with their families.

Multiple players have posted on X, reacting to the tragic shooting.

“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by today’s incidents—a huge thank you to the first responders who ran towards the sound of danger. You’re the ones who should be celebrated today,” Chiefs guards Trey Smith wrote.

“Praying for everyone in Kansas City at the parade,” safety Justin Reid tweeted.
