TAMPA – Another day, another injury concern for the New York Yankees.
Anthony Rizzo was a late scratch from Friday’s lineup against the Mets due to a tight lat, the team said.
The severity of the injury is unknown, but Luis Torrens started at first base for him on Friday. The Yankees are not particularly deep at the position, especially DJ LeMahieu sidelined.
Manager Aaron Boone said on the YES Network broadcast Friday that Rizzo “didn’t seem too concerned” about his lat tightness, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
“He [Rizzo] didn’t seem too concerned with it. He said it’s something he has every now and then during the season, but just wanted to be certain.”
Rizzo, who has enjoyed a strong spring, spoke to reporters after the Yankees 5-3 win over the Mets on Friday.
“I’m fully confident that I will be in the lineup for Opening Day.”
If not, Oswaldo Cabrera would be the next man up for New York.
