NEW YORK — Yankees pitcher Clayton Beeter is here to stay.
According to Joel Sherman, the 25-year-old has made New York’s opening day roster.
Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury prompted an open competition for the teams fifth-starter role in the rotation. And that spot that was unwittingly snatched by Luis Gil, with a standout spring that went beyond the team’s expectations.
But it didn’t hold back Better. With the starting spot no longer in consideration the Yankees 14th ranked prospect was a question mark to make the team’s opening day roster. However, as the team finalizes the remaining roster sport, Beeter found himself a new role.
“I don’t mind it. I’ve done it before,” Beeter explained when asked how he will adjust to pitching out of the bullpen. “Obviously, everyone wants to be a starter, but if there’s a way to help the team as a reliever, then I’m all for it.”
The right-hander was acquired by New York from the Los Angeles Dodgers when they traded away the then-struggling slugger, Gallo. Beeter spent last year in Double-A and Triple-A where he posted a 3.62 ERA across 26 starts and one relief appearance.
In a corresponding move Will Warren has been sent down to Triple-A.
The Bombers now look ahead to Thursday, where they open the season against the rival Houston Astros.
