(The Bronx, NY) – The New York Yankees have traded for Kirk Cousins’ cousin, Cousins.
Jake Cousins, to be exact. A right-handed pitcher, the Bombers sent cash to the Chicago White Sox to pick him up.
After spending most of last year in Triple-A with the Brewers’ and Astros’ affiliates, Cousins signed a minor league deal with Chicago this offseason. He was selected in the 20th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals – at the time his older cousin Kirk was still playing in the nation’s capital, for the Redskins.
“Congrats to my cousin, Jake, being drafted by the Washington Nationals today! There’s room for another Cousins in DC!” said the elder Cousins on X (then Twitter).
Jake Cousins pitched briefly in MLB action last year, appearing in nine games for Milwaukee, pitching in relief. He posted a 4.82 ERA, 7 Ks, and 10 walks.
His minor league numbers were less impressive, as he had a 6.00 ERA or higher in close to a dozen appearances with both Triple-A Nashville, and Triple-A Sugar Land. That said, Cousins put up good numbers in 2021 and 2022 when he pitched to a combined 2.70 ERA.
And while the baseball-playing cousin adjusts to life in the Big Apple, Kirk Cousins is also in a new place.
After leaving Washington for Minnesota ahead of the 2018 seasons, the QB just inked a four-year, $180 million contract to join the Atlanta Falcons. While with the Vikings, he led the team to two playoffs appearances.
A fourth-round pick by Washington in 2012, Cousins had 171 TDs and 55 interceptions across six seasons in Minnesota. For his career he’s thrown for 39,471 yards, 270 TDs, and 110 picks.
